Harvest Community Center Inc. began in a grassroots fashion over 45 years ago when our founders, Orie & Gladys Johnson moved to Santa Maria. They noticed a need in their community and set out to do something about it. Their neighbors did not have enough food for their families and they began buying groceries, with their own money, to provide food for those in need. The Johnson's could be found picking up pastries from local bakeries and distributing them to homeless people in local parks. Before the food bank was established in the city, the Johnson's helped feed hundreds of families in need.
With help from Victory Harvest Church of God in Christ, they began to expand the number of people they are serving. Now Harvest Community Center is looking to expand again - to provide programming for children, teens and adults as well as build a much needed homeless shelter.
